Nostalgia [2005]
The Greek roots of the word “nostalgia” refer to a feeling of homesickness for one’s country, home and family. In a more general sense, it refers to the feeling of longing for the past or a wish to go back to a previous time period. This feeling is marked by references that trigger the subconscious mind. These references can be simple things such as daily events, colors or looking at photographs in an album. Looking at photo albums, one can feel the passing of time. When looking at old photographs, the gestures feel stiffer and more forced, and the will for immortality seems more pronounced in the subjects. Freezing is a method for preservation against external factors. The current series was shaped by the idea that by freezing photographs, the immortality of the people in them (who are all ancestors of the artist) and the memories of the past have been emphasized. It is as if by freezing the photographs, the people present and time itself have been frozen as well.
