Our interpretation and understanding of any artwork has no limited framework, but by observation intensifies and allow us to discover new layers “by staying relevant to the context” and more importantly by considering the statement: “Outside the text there is no salvation.” (In modern interpretation only relevant text is important and not outside it). In this work by Nazli Abbaspour, we perceive the multiple layers and fragmentation which is the result of the artist’s specific encounters with the outside world- disjointed, disintegrated and constantly changing. The work is composed of pieces of fabric cladding bullet casings and hanging by means of thread. Color is not emphasized by the background, but wrapped around the casings. The identity of a subject is constant at birth, but later in the various stages of development, it will recognize complete separation from the foundation or mother and will become disjointed or fragmented. It will be an identity without a specific designation. In this artwork, the main facet creating meaning is the chaotic nature of the fabric. The bullet casings have lost unity of color and thereby threaten and painfully confine identity- the subject. The casings have become the central theme to the subject and hover in place. Nazli Abbaspour, in this artwork and in one out of thousands of possible interpretations, highlights the threat to the identity of modern man and defends partiality, something that has always been criticized.
